Spout Pouch or Stand-Up Pouch: Packaging Selection Guide for Brazilian Beverage Brands Based on Usage Scenarios, Materials and Costs
- Comparison of recommended application scenarios for each flexible packaging format
- Guidelines on material structure selection and dimension specifications for different types of beverages
- Key points of attention related to production costs, delivery lead times and compatibility with the local supply chain
The choice between a spout pouch and a stand-up pouch begins with analyzing the consumption scenario and the type of beverage being sold. Equipped with a dispensing spout, the spout pouch is more suitable for on-the-go beverages such as juices, flavored waters, sports drinks and children’s products, as it enables leak-free consumption and can be resealed after opening. On the other hand, the spout-less stand-up pouch is an advantageous alternative for larger servings, shareable beverages, or products that only require simple opening at the time of use, such as ready-to-drink teas and plant-based beverages in cost-effective packaging.
At the stage of material and specification selection, the packaging structure must be aligned with the beverage’s properties and preservation requirements. For products sensitive to light, oxygen or temperature fluctuations — including natural juices, functional beverages and chocolate drinks — barrier multilayer structures are the most common choice, as they extend shelf life and preserve the product’s sensory characteristics. Dimensions should be determined according to the serving size sold and the filling limits of the bottling lines available at Brazilian industrial facilities, avoiding modifications that would increase operating costs. For carbonated beverages, it is also necessary to verify the structure’s resistance to internal pressure, regardless of the chosen format.
Production costs and delivery lead times are decisive factors for brands operating across different regions of Brazil and Latin America. In general, spout pouches involve additional manufacturing steps and extra components, which can result in a higher unit cost compared to conventional stand-up pouches, especially for smaller-volume orders. Development and delivery lead times vary depending on the complexity of customization, the availability of inputs in the local supply chain and the installed capacity of packaging suppliers. For regional launches or short-term promotional campaigns, it is recommended to confirm lead times in advance, also taking into account the logistics procedures between production units and distribution centers.
Finally, the decision should combine consumer perception, operational feasibility and the brand’s positioning strategy. It is recommended to conduct usability tests with samples of both formats, especially for products that will be sold through sales channels with distinct characteristics, such as small retail stores, supermarkets and e-commerce platforms. Compliance with Brazilian sanitary regulations applicable to packaging in contact with food and beverages must also be verified for both options. Through an integrated assessment of these criteria, brands can select the packaging that best meets their objectives without compromising the budget or launch schedule.
